The
cleveland Browns was founded in 1946 under
owner Arthur Mcbride and became a charter
member of the All-America Football
Conference (AAFC) in 1946 with Paul Brown as
head coach and general manager. The Cleveland
Browns Home stadium is known as Cleveland
Browns Stadium.The cleveland browns
dominated the All-American Football League
winning the championship from 1946 to
1949.The Cleveland Browns joined the
National Football league in 1950 and
immediately started dominating becoming one
of the leagues' best team That year, with
Motley leading the league in rushing (810
yards), the team captured the first of six
consecutive division crowns and went on to
win the National football leagues'
championships in 1950, 1954, 1955 and lastly
in 1964. |
Running back Leroy Kelly replaced Brown
who had led the cleveland Browns to the
NFL in 1964 as Cleveland’s main
offensive threat and won rushing
championships in 1967 and 1968. Under
head coach Blanton Collier the Browns
won division titles in 1968 and 1969,
but lost in the championship game both
years running.The Cleveland Browns
dominanace faded in the 70's and despite
a playoff appearance in 1972, they lost
in the first round, failing also to make
it to the postseason in 1973 and
1979.The Cleveland Browns only bright
spot in the 70's was the American
Football Conference division
Championship in 1971 which they won. |

The
Browns drafted Bernie Kosar in 1985.He
teamed with Earnest Byner and Kevin Mack to
power Cleveland’s resurgence in the
mid-1980s. The Browns made the playoffs from
1985 through 1989, and Kosar became one of
the NFL’s top-ranked quarterbacks. Cleveland
reached the AFC Championship Game in 1986,
1987, and 1989, but each time, the Browns
lost to the Denver Broncos.Their only
consolation was winning the American
Football Conference Division Championship in
the same yrs. |

The Cleveland Browns suffered five
losing seasons in their final six years
in Cleveland.IN early November, 1995
team owner Art Modell announced plans to
move the team to Baltimore. Three months
after the announcement, which shocked
loyal Browns fans and the city of
Cleveland, the NFL granted Cleveland a
team and rights to the Browns’ name,
colors, and memorabilia.Modell was
awarded a new franchise, named the
Baltimore Ravens, which began play in
1996. The Browns would return in 1999
under owner Al Lerner and head coach
