A Spanish national, Juan Rodriguez Cabillo
was the first European to settle in the area that is now San Diego in the
mid sixteenth century. The city owes it's name to explorer
Sebastian Vizcaino in 1602. san Diego, in the mid sixteenth century was
under the rule of New Spain. The first Mission in the northern part of
California was opened in San Diego, in 1769. Colonists started arriving
five years later and one year after that the native people started a
rebellion. The Mission was burned and the priest and two other aid workers
were killed.
The Mission was later rebuilt and fortified stronger than
before and in the late eighteenth century the mission was regarded as the
largest in California, having more than one thousand four hundred natives
as part of the mission. San Diego was established as a city in 1850 and
thirty five years later the city was connected by railroad to the rest of
the United States. San Diego was re-established as a city thirty six years
after it was first given the status. The city played host to two fairs,
the Panama-California Exposition and the California Pacific International
Exposition, in 1915 and 1935 respectively.
Before the end of the Cold War,
San Diego had a very huge Military presence, which deteriorated
significantly after the Cold War ceased. The Military has also played a
big role in the economy, but since then the city has become a leader in
the Biotech industry with large cooperation's based in the city, e.g.
Qualcomm. San Diegans are known to be very politically conservative. Here
are a few demographics for the city of san Diego; Living in the city are
271,315 families. 60.18% of the population are White, 25.40% are Hispanic
or Latino, 13.65% are of Asian origin, 7.86% are African American, 0.62%
are Native American and 0.48% Pacific Islander.
