The
New York Jets were founded in 1960 as a
charter American Football League (AFL)
member. They later joined the NFL in the
1970 merger. Currently the New York Jets are
one of four teams in the Eastern Division of
the American Football Conference (AFC) of
the National Football League (NFL).The teams
uniform consists of the colors green and
white. The helmet design is a green oval,
with the letters "NY" superimposed, and
superimposed over that, the word "JETS" and
a football. Formerly known as the Titans
(1960-62),in 1960 they become charter
members of the AFL, naming former
quarterback great Sammy Baugh as their first
head coach. |

In it's first eight seasons the team
enjoyed mild success finishing second in
the eastern division thrice.In 1963 a
new head coach was appointed namely webb
eubank and the name of the team was
changed to jets due to the fact that the
teams home,shea studium is located
between New York’s John F. Kennedy
International and La Guardia Airports.in
1964 and 1965 the team produced rookies
running back Matt Snell and Joe Namath.
Namath in 1967 became the first
professional quarterback to throw for
more than 4,000 yards in one season. He
did so in only a 14 games, a feat which
is impressive, even by modern standards.
Don Maynard led the league in receiving
yards that season, he eventually became
the AFL’s career leader in yards and
receptions. New York’s performance was
on and off during the late 1980s and
early 1990s. |

Leading players included McNeil, quarterback
Ken O’Brien, and wide receiver Al Toon.
Quarterback Boomer Esiason joined the Jets
in 1993, but the franchise encountered
repeated frustration, including placing last
in its division in 1996. At the end of the
1996 season, the Jets traded four draft
picks to the New England Patriots to gain
the right to hire coach Bill Parcells, who
had guided both the New York Giants and the
Patriots to Super Bowl appearances. The New
York Jets Hall of Famers include Weeb Ewbank,
Don Maynard and Joe Namath. Hall of Famer
quarterback Joseph William Namath nicknamed
"Broadway Joe" was drafted by the New York
Jets in 1964, from Alabama.Namath was an AFL
All-Star four times, in 1965, 1967, 1968 and
1969; and a Pro Bowler in 1972. |
He is a member of the Pro Football Hall
of Fame, the Jets' all-time team, the
All-time All-AFL Team and the American
Football League Hall of Fame.Namath is
best known for predicting his team's
unlikely victory in the third AFL-NFL
World Championship Game, over Don
Shula's NFL Baltimore Colts (currently
known as the Indianapolis Colts). Other
Hall of Famer coach Weeb Ewbank, took
over the reins as coach and general
manager of the New york Jets, at that
time known as the "New York Titans," on
the same day the new owners of the team
changed it's name, on April 15, 1963.As
coach of the Baltimore Colts, Ewbank had
won the 1958 and 1959 NFL championships. |

Ewbank's Jets won the American Football
League Championship in 1968 with a victory
over the defending AFL champions, the
Oakland Raiders. In the third World
Championship Game, the Colts (proclaimed by
some to be "the greatest pro football team
of all time") were heavily favored over the
AFL's "overmatched" Jets. But with Weeb's
confident planning, the Jets ran a game plan
that mystified the Colts, and came out with
a 16-7 victory. In doing so, the Jets made
Ewbank the ONLY MAN ever to coach teams to
victory in an NFL championship, an American
Football League Championship, and a World
Championship. His record in the AFL was
50-42-6. Ewbank was selected as the Head
Coach of the All-Time All-AFL team, and is a
member of the American Football League Hall
of Fame. The New York Jets have won one
League Champiuonship in 1968 and have one
Super Bowl(III) win in 1968 post-season.The
Jets firstplayed their home matches at the
Polo Grounds, then at Shea Stadium. They are
currently playing at Giants Stadium in East
Rutherford,New Jersey. |
