Ravens History |

The
Baltimore Ravens Professional football club
was founded in 1996 by owner Art Modell who
relocated the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore.
The Baltimore Home stadium is known as M&T
Bank (formerly PSInet Stadium). The
Baltimore Ravens team is named after a poem
entitled “The Raven” (1845) by American
writer Edgar Allan Poe, who lived in
Baltimore during the 1830s.Art Modell
brought to Baltimore a muster of adept
stars, including quarterback Vinny
Testaverde and running back Earnest Byner.
He also hired former Baltimore Colts head
coach Ted Marchibroda to lead the new
Baltimore team. |
After three consecutive losing seasons,
Marchibroda was succeeded by Brian
Billick, who had served as the offensive
coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings
the season before. Through shrewd draft
picks and free agent signings, the
Ravens rebuilt their team around a
standout defense. The team was led by
linebacker Ray Lewis, who became one of
the leading tacklers and top defenders
in the NFL. With the guidance of then
coach Brian Billick the Baltimore Ravens
made the playoffs for the first time
after the 2000 season, by defeating the
Denver Broncos in the first round of the
playoffs, the Ravens thwarted the
Tennessee Titans (owners of the regular
season's best record) and the Oakland
Raiders to win a berth in Super Bowl
XXXV, which they won defeating the new
York Giants, 34-7.The Baltimore Ravens
Won their first North Division title in
2003 and after that season Art Modell
officially transferred ownership of the
team to Steve Biscotti, ending over 40
years of tenure as an NFL franchise
owner. |
